Ian Watkinson for NEU National Executive
Elections for the National Education Union NEC opens on 7 April 2023
Stand up for education: vote for Ian Watkinson for National Executive member.
I pledge to:
Work for professional unity in the education sector.
Take action to make schools safe.
Organise around health & safety.
Tackle the workload crisis.
Campaign on pay and funding.
I have a proven track record on:
Organising around Health & Safety, including leading on the union's work during the Covid pandemic. I led on the Section 44 initiative that saved thousands of lives.
Leading on training and organising to help encourage and build a strong reps and activist base.
Working with other trade unions both in the education sector and beyond, to build coalitions that can deliver real solidarity.
"Ian has played a vitally important role in developing our Covid response and our health and safety work in general."

"Ian has worked tirelessly leading the union’s national health & safety organising work. He has led on campaigns tackling asbestos, work related stress, and more recently Covid, including our incredible Section 44 action. His determination to make schools safe for educators and children is renowned and respected across the entire trade union movement. The knowledge, experience, and commitment that he brings will continue to make a real difference on the new executive. I would urge members to re-elect him."

I am supporting Ian Watkinson for the NEU EXECUTIVE because:
Ian is a long-time and tireless campaigner on matters which put members’ lives at risk, such as asbestos, poor mental health, work related injury, covid, long covid and unsafe air
Ian is a long time anti-privatisation campaigner, leading collective action against the academisation of his local schools
As chair of the NEU Health and Safety Organising Forum, Ian steered the policy of the NEU to protect its members throughout the pandemic by enacting Section 44 action so members would not enter unsafe schools. He went on to lead the work around the joint union covid checklists which were used across all our schools
Ian has supported NEU campaigning around climate change, to protect members from unsafe working temperatures, fire and flood
Ian has always worked collaboratively with members and reps across the political spectrum to achieve change and protection for members
Ian is a serving primary classroom teacher and is above all someone who believes in the power of collective action to protect the pay and conditions of our members."
